And it might be the rest of the issue. Actually, unless you're desperate for new pages, I'd skip reading this one and wait until the whole thing is finished. Another 4 pages or so. My husband has expressed an urge to do some serious comicing this weekend, so it sounds like a hot date for us both! HOOOOOOOOTTTT

I've also started up a blog dedicated to feminism in webcomics, spinning off my old Comixpedia column : Webcomics are from Uranus.

megsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1152385435629785292006-07-08T14:29:00.000-04:002006-07-08T15:03:55.686-04:00
Finally!

Got those 4 pages up, only a few days past when I said they'd be there. Just a bunch of distractions going on this week that all add up, you know? Hopefully they're worth the wait!
Click here for the latest update!
The beginning of the issue starts here.

One of the distracting things that I can actually take responsibility for is that my old personal domain finally expired. I've now dropped tiefgrau.com and the site is now MeaghanQuinn.com! So I did a new site design in honor of the switch.

megsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1152141762854202122006-07-05T19:20:00.000-04:002006-07-05T19:22:42.866-04:00Sorry folks, no update today. It's one of those frustrating things where I've had plenty of interruptions and plenty of having to go back and fix things I didn't do right the first time. Sometimes you just don't realize until you're coloring you forgot to draw something. Anyway, THIS WEEK. Friday at the latest. 4 pages!

megsnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1151693826970343212006-06-30T14:45:00.000-04:002006-06-30T14:57:07.043-04:00
Howdy boys and girls!

I'm working on a 4 page update for next wednesday, but in the meantime I'd like to draw the ladies' attention to Lea Hernadez's latest announcement:

WOMEN WEBCOMICKER GRANT NAN is now open for submissions!
Guidlines are here!

I'd like to personally make myself availible to anyone who wants it for editorial help in getting your submission together. Just shoot me an email (mequinn AT gmail with the dot com) if you'd like help. I think it's just tremendous of Lea to do this. Not that we have a terrible shortage of women drawing webcomics, but we don't have so nearly many high profile ones and this is an oppurtunity to show off what we gals can do. Not that there's anything wrong with boys (Hello Andy and Trout!), but comics as a whole seem a little too male dominated to me. Webcomics are doing a lot to poke at the holes in mainstream comics, but a big thrust of women doing a variety of work adds so much to that effort. And goodness knows I like variety in my comics.

Speaking of comics I like, I wrote up a defense of Josh Lesnick's Girly in my livejournal yesterday in response to a Fleen review of the book.

In other news, BOYFIGHT... IN SPACE, my mini comic, is hot off the presses and about ready to be sold. I just have to set up some way of recieving payment! The comics will be $2, plus some shipping.

megsnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1150908569892797822006-06-21T12:46:00.000-04:002006-06-21T12:49:29.906-04:00It's time for a new issue of Eat the Roses!

I outdid myself this time. If actually counting page per day updates, I averaged 1.5 pages per day. Yes, I had to backdate stuff I already put up to get all 6 new pages on the website, but this makes up for me being so slow before.

It starts here!

I'm going to shoot for at least 3 pages done per week, but they'll be posted randomly depending on how the story flows through them. I'd really like to keep up this pace, mostly because Andy has outdone himself and written several issues in advance! We won't be stopping for anything lame like writer's block on THIS comic, no sir!

I also made the decision to stick with the color, even though coloring every page can be a pain. It just looks so nice and shiny! But I did get a chance to break out some different black and white art for this update. Hope it looks just as cool to everyone else!

I'd also like to remind any Ottawa-area folk that I'll be at C-CACE this weekend. We've got an honest-to-goodness webcomic panel on Saturday.

megsnoreply@blogger.com26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1150418306581534542006-06-15T20:36:00.000-04:002006-06-15T20:38:26.590-04:00Howdy!

Um . . . Wowza!

Like the picture of Ed I drew up really quickly? (it's the same pose as an upcoming page in the next issue, you'll see, but reinked, just because I liked it so much)

I stuck it into a wallpaper as well. Go on over and browse. I've got a couple others up as well. One other brand spankin' new, and another the more intrepid readers have already discovered!

Maybe next I'll finally get around to fixing all the menus, as I kinda screwed with the code and messed them up so they're not entirely the most visible things.

Scroll on down in the blog for some reccommendations and possibly the only convention I'll make it to this year!

megsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1150319278253005102006-06-14T16:55:00.000-04:002006-06-14T17:08:35.320-04:00
Misc stuff

Wow, two posts in a half hour!

Looks like I'm making at least one convention this year, and that's mostly because it's happening right in Ottawa! I'll be at the Canadian Arts and Cartooning Expo (aka C-ACE) with my husband and the righteously awesome Matt Trepal, of Fight, Cast or Evade. We've got a panel and a possible webcomics jam session on Saturday. More updates closer to the convention!

(If you don't read Matt's comic, now's a really good time to jump in, in my opinion. Start here and keep going. Matt's just started a new art style and I think it's incredible and gives him so much more range. I also love the dream sequence at the beginning of the link there. Reminds me of a certain movie adaptation of a certain book about rabbits. Hmmm...!

Speaking of other people's comics: Faith Erin Hicks has made her comic Ice free! Read it here! It's good stuff.

megsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1150318097446725792006-06-14T16:41:00.000-04:002006-06-14T16:48:17.493-04:00
HOORAY!

So the first chapter is fin. I just got back from vacation, so this took a little longer than I anticipated. I also slugged out a mini comic that'll be availible soon. But the next pages are coming along at a nice clip and I'm working on ways of updating faster, especially since Andy's WAY ahead on scripting.

I also drew a sort of scandalous cover image for my husband's comic, Naught Framed. He requested cows, he got a crotch shot. This is what happens when you draw excessive pantie shots, fellas! You get burly men critch shots!!!

I'd better get to work on those new pages. We left you at a sort of cliffhanger on that last page, huh? After such a light romp, to boot!

megsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1148753097370603772006-05-27T13:57:00.000-04:002006-05-27T14:06:49.633-04:00
Hey kids!

I'm nearly done with the last batch of pages for this issue (and have already started on the next! plus a mini comic for print only!)

But while you're waiting on me, check out this community on livejournal I occasionally draw really, really quick comics for. It's called comic exercise. One of the latest ones features a young Sammy.

I've also made a couple of posts in Dandizettes (my community sketch blog) lately.

megsnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1148311683889307432006-05-22T11:25:00.000-04:002006-05-22T11:28:05.536-04:00I haven't had a chance to finish up the last few pages of this issue since my husband's family is now in town and I spent the weekend totally redesigning his comic's website. So check out Framed!!! (which is updating again) and see how you like it! I'll be getting to the rest of the pages in time. Or making him do it.
Redoing websites teaches me new stuff all the time. So now I'm a year's better and smarter at it, I'm beginning to itch to redo the Eat the Roses website. But... I should probably draw comics instead.

megsnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1147697742073916642006-05-15T08:40:00.000-04:002006-05-15T08:55:43.576-04:00Updated! With still more horrible punk Mary Poppins, fight scenes, and hands!

I draw goofy things, what can I say?

When we did that Keencast, part of it got cut out for technical reasons where I talked about art a little bit. I joked around about drawing hands and how many ways there were to avoid drawing hands. Unfortunately, I do not take my own advice. I've got people gesturing all over the place, hands akimbo. I like hands. They're horrible to draw sometimes, but I love the way they look. But for this update, I finally got a chance to not draw hands, however briefly. It made me feel dirty.

Plug: I recently got around to reading through the Zap! archives. Space archives. I am committed to being a webcomicker, and have been for over ten years. I put up my first webpage, Pink Radio, in late 1995. On this page was a link to a preview of "Monster Friday," a short story from the Japanese CD-ROM anthology ComicON Vol. 1. The Web is a force for equalizing audience access for women who want to make comics, but face a still-hostile direct market, and many hurdles (mainly financial), in a somewhat friendlier, but still difficult, bookstore and convention circuit markets.

megsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1146677454771099422006-05-03T13:28:00.000-04:002006-05-04T09:27:26.233-04:00This update took a bit more time that I thought, but the next couple should be much faster, since during that time I worked way ahead on the next pages. We'll be discussing our comic as well as geeky things we like (and possibly having a gollum-off). It won't actually be up until early next week, but as soon as it's up I'll post a link to where you can download it.

The reason I'm posting about it NOW is because they do read questions from peeps. So, if you have a question for me or Megs, just go over to the forum and post a question, or post it in the comments here and I'll transfer it over to the forums.

YAY! We haven't forgotten about the comic - Really! Both Megs and I just got attacked by a severe case of "life."

But stay tuned, a little birdy told me there may be something coming soonish!

Until then -

BOY FIGHT!

Speakernoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1140193085163571342006-02-17T11:02:00.000-05:002006-02-17T11:18:05.196-05:00How to take over the writing gig for an established web comic without being lynched
by Andy Floyd

Seriously, "Eat the Roses" ran for FIVE years under the the lone thumb of the awesomely talented Meaghan "The Lone Thumb" Quinn-Damonk. Under her care it grew a "fan base" (not to be confused with a fan soprano! [i almost deleted that joke, but it was just too bad not to share!]) and "The Lone Thumb" herself became known throughout the comicsphere! And because I have a death wish, I'm going take over the writing duties!

So how on earth did this happen? Why is "ETR" coming back and why is this utter-n00b writing it?

Well, first off, I'm not a n00b. (besides, only n00bs use the word n00b anymore!) I had an extremely crappy and unpopular college gag-strip that ran for a few years back in the early days of web comicing. Because I realized it was crappy, I gave it up. (When the funniest thing in your strip is the stick-figure filler drawn by you're friend and college roomie, it's time to stop!)

Then I discovered a little thing called "writing." See, it's this novel newfangled concept I had never tried before. I thought it was more important to be "current" than anything else, so I'd wait till the night my strip was to go up and freak! "OMG! I NEED A STRIP!"

Needless to say, this was NOT the way to do a comic. Since drawing took so long for me, I'd end up writing down the first thing that came to me - and the first thing that comes to me isn't often the BEST idea.

But this "writing" thing - it was neat! You see, you THINK things through first. Then, you write them down. Then, you DEVELOP them until you have a "story" that not only makes sense, but is actually kind of cool!

I spent the next few years writing. Novels, scripts, short stories. I didn't care what, I just wrote. And for some reason, people seemed to like it. The damndest people too. Hell, one person even bought a couple of my spec scripts recently for a cartoon show that's going to be pitched! (Don't know if anything'll happen with them though!)

So, yeah, I practiced! And just when I start thinking - "Hey, it would be really nifty-keen to get back into web comics! But I'm too lazy to draw, so I need to find an artist!" - I get an E-Mail. It's the Lone Thumb. She asked if she could pitch an idea for me to write because she wanted to draw but was too lazy to write.

It was a match made in LJ!

The pitch was based on this guy named Samuel Orange. He's apparently from the five year history I mentioned earlier. So it would be sort of a spin-off of ETR. Now, I read ETR back in the day, but I didn't finish it. I dropped out of the web comic world before it ended. And on top of that, it had been YEARS since I read it. So I decided to sit down and read the entire archives.

Which I did - in two days.

Ideas flooded my head. Characters I wanted to use and manipulate, events I wanted to capitalize on. I was already writing the Sammy story, but I couldn't get these ideas out of my head. So I counter-pitched a new ETR spin-off of the Sammy spin-off of the old ETR. (Did that make sense?)

Lone Thumb liked my ideas, but didn't want to do two comics side by side. I mean, she's already doing two (but I dunno if I can talk about that other one since I'm not involved with it!) and it might get confusing using the same characters doing similar things in two different series. So we combined the two ideas. Longer slightly more serious ETR arcs book ended by Sammy silliness. So, whenever the art is finished you'll get ETR Issue 0, the silly Sammy comic, and then we'll go straight into a four issue deeper arc which is already written. After that arc, another Sammy comic. Then another ETR arc, etc . . . for as long as we can keep it up.

So, that's the story, morning glory.

And cuz I'm nice, and a spoiler-ho, here's a dialogue sample from page 25 of issue #0:

"Sweet God in Heaven!"

That's right, I'm turning ETR hyper-religious right wing! You heard it here first! I'm actually going to kill EVERYONE and recast it with Jerry Falwell as the "Captain Mal" character and . . . okay, I can't keep that up. It's just too ridiculous!

In all seriousness, I think you'll like what's to come. Cuz Lone Thumb does, and that's really all that matters, isn't it?

Speakernoreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1140143270748470342006-02-16T21:27:00.000-05:002006-02-16T21:27:50.763-05:00*taps the microphone*

this thing on?

yeah, so . . . hello!

Speakernoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7609113.post-1139234814985519172006-02-06T09:04:00.000-05:002006-02-06T09:06:54.986-05:00Um, just kidding.
